For every woman I look after in labour and help her achieve the birth she wants, I feel an immense sense of pride. Not just for myself, but for the woman too."

This can be a mission statement for yoga teachers too in the journey of the preparation towards birth, we are so looking forward to welcoming people with an interest in this mission.

Yoga Classes Ibiza

It’s my second full day on the island and just thinking about it everything has happened so fast already! I gave up my tenancy of my flat in the UK only a week ago, put everything into storage, packed up my car, and headed off to follow my dream of becoming a yoga teacher in Ibiza.

Time goes in a special kind of way on this island – it seems to be much more fluid and relaxed than back home. This morning I did my own yoga practice alone before the sun came up, which was wonderful. I love to be in a class having corrections from teachers and experiencing the energies of other people, but my home-practice is my sort of guilty pleasure. I think it is important to do your own practice in between classes to keep your body agile, to remember what you’ve learnt in previous classes, and to really get to know your own body in the stillness and quiet that comes with being alone. B.K.S. Iyengar in his book Light on Yoga said, “It is only through the mirror of yoga that the whole of man reflects to know himself.

At the end of this class I put my palms together, bowed my head, closed my eyes and said the words ‘Namaste’ . And that got me thinking, why do I do that? Why do we all do that at the end of a yoga class? And do we have to be ‘spiritual’ in order to say it?

In short – I think the answer is no, we don’t need to be spiritual to say this. In Hinduism Namaste means ‘I bow to the divine in you.’, but it really is just a concept of how to respectfully greet another person. In fact - when I worked in a yoga studio in London one of our clients refused to believe that it wasn’t just ‘Have-a-nice-day’ spoken really fast!

Namaste (spoken ‘nah-mas-tay’) may just be one word, but the meaning behind it is explained through a whole phrase. ‘Nama’ means to bow, ‘as’ means I , and ‘te’ means you – so literally it means ‘I bow to you’. It is done at the end of a yoga class to sort of bridge the gap between teacher and student, bringing a nice energetic union when the mind is less active and the atmosphere more peaceful. Some of my friends have commented how they would feel embarassed to say it at the end of a class as they don’t feel they are a true ‘yogi’ – but anyone can say it without any beliefs or knowledge behind it, it is purely a nice greeting.

A nice explanation that I found of Namaste is here:

My soul honours your soul.
I honour the place in you where the entire universe resides.
I honor the light, love, truth, beauty and peace within you, because it is also within me.
In sharing these things we are united, we are the same, we are one.
All of this form just one word! What a beautiful way to end each and every class.

After this home-practice I spent the rest of the day organising myself for the work that I’ll be doing here. I ate my lunch on Talamanca beach and took in some wonderful Mediterranean rays before a meeting with Jacqueline, the YogaShala Ibiza founder, in Santa Gertrudis. Jacqueline totally got me for April Fool’s today as she got me believing that the Bougainvillaea bushes on Ibiza were moving around at night, which we both found hilarious.

There are so many exciting things that we’re doing as a company over the next few months – free classes at the Garden of Joy over the May period, the Detox Holidays, the Pregnancy and Post-Natal Module and the 200-hour Teacher Training that I’ll be on.

I feel so lucky for Jacqueline to have taken me on, and feel blessed to be able to share my journey through these blogs with our readers. Jacqueline has so much knowledge about yoga from years of learning, and I feel like I am ‘downloading’ her amazing information into my mind – how fortunate am I! The meeting was all talk of new posters, leaflets, newsletters and website changes.
So watch this space – we’re about to get busy!

Talking of getting busier - it is amazing to see how each day that passes the roads get a bit busier, there are more people out, the shop owners are sprucing up their places with a splash of paint, the beach clubs are preparing their outside seating areas, new umbrellas and signs go up – the island is preparing for the high season to come and the feeling of summer is beginning to vibrate through every place, person and thing.

An important aspect of the role of the Yoga teacher in both pre and postnatal work is to ´mother the mother´. For both the expectant and the new mother, her Yoga class can be a time to rest in the assurance that she is in safe hands, and that the experience and training of the teacher can allow her to enjoy the sense of being cared for, understood, supported and encouraged in her role as mother.
With thanks to Uma Dinsore-Tuli Phd.

Along with Jacqueline assisting on the Course is Judy Cameron.

Judy has vast experience in the field of Childbirth Education her research into creating the most cutting edge approach to this area of Prenatal and Antenatal care is truly ground breaking.

Judy Cameron

Judy has practised Yoga for many years and has been teaching Pre and Postnatal Yoga since 1996.

It was while working as a nurse in Asia that she first became drawn to Yoga, when expecting her first child. She gained enormous benefit from this practice which gave her the confidence to go on to have her second child at home.

She trained initially in South India at the Sivananda Vedanta Ashram in Kerala. She subsequently went on to train for a further 2 years with Janet Balaskas, Lolly Stirk and Yvonne Moore at the Active Birth Centre in London. It was at this time that she came to understand how a more intuitive approach to Yoga, based on the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli, could transform her practice.

She gained her Diploma in Teaching Yoga with the British Wheel of Yoga in the late 1990’s and has also completed a Diploma in Baby Yoga with Birthlight, and Yoga for the Special Child at the Special Yoga Centre in London. She also has a strong interest in the use of hypnosis in childbirth and teaches HypnoBirthing privately and in 2011 established Breathing, Relaxation and Self-Hypnosis classes within the NHS.

She is a registered midwife, and runs her own classes in Yoga for Pregnancy, Couples Birth Preparation workshops, Postnatal and Baby Yoga. She also offers Yoga for the Special Child and HypnoBirthing and Birth Preparation on a private one-to-one basis. As Director of the YogaBirth Teacher Training and Tutor for the BWY Pregnancy Module, she has a deep interest in passing on her knowledge to other teachers.

Judy teaches in Aberdeenshire and Perthshire and runs courses throughout the UK.

Jacqueline has also been working for many years with Luci Jay Stewart who assists on our Prenatal Module.

Luci Jay Stewart

Luci qualified as a midwife in England in 2005, and worked for 5 years in a busy obstetric unit. Luci felt motivated to train as a HypnoBirthing practitioner and doula. In January this year Luci successfully completed a three month return to practice course, to enable her to practice midwifery again.

Luci has such a way about her she is a deeply caring person, with a passion for women centred midwifery which resonates deeply with the ethos of our Course.

Luci gained her Degree in Midwifery BSc (Hons) in 2005 - University Of the West of England (UWE)
Worked as midwife for NHS in St. Michael's Hospital, Bristol 2005 - 2010

Meet Fernanda, a graduate of Yoga Shala Ibiza Teacher Training Program. A practicing yogini since 1999, Fernanda graduated from the Yogashala Ibiza Teacher Training Program in 2011. Since then, she has been busy teaching a variety of yoga styles in Basel, Switzerland where she currently resides. Fernanda remembers her Yoga Teacher Training at YogaShala Ibiza as a memorable time building community and exploring the depths of yoga.

My time in Ibiza with Jacqueline planted seeds in my body, mind, and spirit that to this day are still growing. Jacqueline has a tremendous wealth and depth of yoga knowledge that she shares easily and effortlessly with her students. In addition, the yoga community that builds with the other yoga students is a tremendous source of support not only while in Ibiza, but also beyond. The students, the location and Jacqueline’s expertise combined to make the YogaShala Ibiza training a strong foundation to help me gain the tools and experience necessary to begin teaching yoga. When you train with Jacqueline, you have a mentor and a yoga guide for life!

Fernanda first fell in love with yoga because of the physical benefits of the practice. Over time, as the seeds planted from the YogaShala Ibiza training have germinated, yoga has infused itself deep into her body and mind and she is continuously discovering new depths to her practice. She finds that no matter what is going on in her life, she always feels more relaxed, more space in her body and mind, and more grounded after a practice.

Fernanda also studied Prenatal and Postnatal Teacher Training with Jacqueline and then went on to teach at The Yoga Show in London.

"I had the most amazing time in Ibiza at the Yogashala. I was surrounded by some of the most inspirational people I've ever met and felt supported by my group who I know I will stay in contact with forever."

"I am excited to be returning to Yogashala Ibiza for the pre-natal and post natal teacher training course with Jacqueline next month. I think it will be beautiful to be able to offer yoga to mothers and babies, for them to have that yoga connection, from the womb and beyond. During the 5 years I lived and worked in Dubai, my students were mainly women - of all ages and stages of life - I feel this training will complete my circle of experience.
Since my very first Power Yoga class with Jacqueline over a decade ago, progressing on to the BWY foundation and Diploma course and through the years that I have been teaching, I have found Jacqueline to be an exuberant and dedicated teacher who has been an inspiration to me; always supportive and full of wisdom and experience.
I'm looking forward to this next step on my yoga journey with Jacqueline, I know it will be a professional, carefully planned course - thorough, inclusive, full-on and fun!"

Pregnancy & Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training

Pregnancy & Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training

Ibiza Yoga Pregnancy & Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training 85 Hour Module

85 Hour Module

13th April - 22nd April 2019 (arrival and departure dates)
£1795.00 inclusive

Jacqueline Purnell is a prime mover in identifying the need for offering Yoga to pregnant women and mothers with babies.RPYS Yoga

It is a time in a woman's life that can be enhanced greatly by safe and appropriate yoga practices.

Jacqueline feels passionately that training teachers and those connected with childbirth is vital for creating safe and respectful spaces for women to be facilaitated to find balance in this special time in their lives and their families' lives.

This module is designed to create an opportunity to help you develop safe and appropriate means of increasing your student´s strength and flexibility to support their ascent towards childbirth and beyond.

Jacqueline has put together a programme, which combines Asanas, breath work and mudras to optimise safety and fluidity within the specialised teaching.

This module is suitable for existing Yoga Teachers who wish to integrate Pregnant women into their general classes and those who wish to offer classes and or courses to Pregnant women and Baby and Me classes and or courses.

This module is also suitable for Midwives, Doulas and anyone involved in Obstetrics and childbirth education.

We will work progressively through a range of asanas including:

Forward and backward bends, rotations, inversions, standing postures and arm-stretching asanas.

At the beginning of the module participants are encouraged to examine their own strengths and weaknesses and to develop a personal set of goals regarding the speciality of teaching pregnancy and postnatal recovery Yoga.

There is a crying need for pregnancy and postnatal recovery Yoga classes. We aim to set out basic guide lines for setting up and running pregnancy classes and classes for babies and mums.

Lots of expecting mums are referred to by their midwives and doctors and during their Yoga sessions they have the opportunity to develop a profound bond with their unborn child.

As well as enhancing the vitality, mobility, general health and emotional well-being of the expectant mother, pregnancy Yoga also provides a valuable quiet space in which to develop their relationship with the baby inside.

Once those babies are born, we owe it to them and their mothers to give them the chance to continue to develop that bond through Yoga, promoting postnatal well-being for mother and child.

It´s a special kind of work, and we need more teachers who are able to run these kind of classes.
